Position Summary

The Panel Fabrication Technician is a crucial, hands-on role responsible for the precise assembly, wiring, and testing of custom electrical control panels used in Building Automation Systems (BAS) projects. Working from Setpoint Systems Corporation’s Littleton, CO facility, this individual ensures that all control panels are built accurately, safely, and efficiently according to engineering specifications, quality standards, and industry codes, specifically UL 508A.

Pay Range: $20 - $25 / hour

Key Responsibilities and Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following core duties:

  • Technical Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams (blueprints) to determine component placement and wiring paths.

  • Mechanical Assembly: Install and mechanically mount all control panel components, including PLCs, relays, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, power supplies, VFDs, and HMIs, into enclosures and sub-panels.

  • Precision Wiring: Execute complex point-to-point electrical wiring of all components within the panel enclosures. This requires ensuring proper wire gauge selection, correct color coding, neat wire routing, and secure terminal connections.

  • Enclosure Fabrication: Utilize appropriate hand tools, power tools, and light fabrication equipment (drills, punches, saws) to cut, modify, and prepare enclosures and mounting plates as required by the design.

  • Quality Control & Testing: Conduct thorough continuity checks, point-to-point wiring verifications, and power-up testing to ensure the panel functions correctly, meets the Bill of Materials (BOM), and adheres to all electrical drawings prior to shipment.

  • Documentation & Inventory: Accurately complete all required build documentation, maintain organized records of materials used, and proactively communicate inventory needs or discrepancies to the Panel Shop Lead.

  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and maintain continuous compliance with industry standards, particularly UL 508A and applicable electrical codes (NFPA 70/NEC).

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED is required. Completion of a technical certification, vocational training, or an Associate's degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Automation, or a related technical field is highly preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of documented experience in building, wiring, or assembling industrial electrical control panels, switchgear, or complex electrical assemblies.

  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated strong proficiency in reading and interpreting complex electrical schematics, mechanical layout drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).

  • Tool Usage: Expert use of all standard electrical and mechanical hand tools (e.g., crimpers, wire strippers, torque wrenches, multimeters) and power tools common to panel fabrication.

  • Quality Focus: Meticulous attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to producing high-quality, neat, and standardized workmanship.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and bend for extended periods throughout the workday.

  • Ability to lift and/or move components weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Manual dexterity required for component wiring and assembly.

  • The work is primarily performed in a well-lit, climate-controlled panel shop environment, with moderate noise levels from fabrication equipment.
